DocClog, I'm about a year late in answering about the cafe. AND, oops - its not at Oldshoremore! It's in the hamlet of Tarbet near Fangemore. Same area tho. Very good soup, excellent pies and cakes with a five sea view.

Notarian,
You mention a cafe just passed Oldshoremore onthe way to Balchrick. Any more info as to how to find it? Im looking for a good lunch spot between Richonich and Durness.

(York to Durness by as many back raods as possible)

Thanks

Ok i have it on good authority that their is 1 copper to cover most of this area!

A838 is a single track A road with stunning views. only thing to watch out for is folk comming the other way, but with passing points every 100 yards or so you should be fine. (Sept i saw about 20 cars on this whole ride.250k) The ride along the Lochs is just to die for.

Turn left on to the A894 and head to Scourie. Look out for the Highland Cows! the road becomes a wide smooth and fast run for about 20 miles them back to single lane fun and the veiws...

Long, long straight out of coming out of Collaboll on the A838 along Loch Shin. Boring road, but good scenery. It gets a bit better at Loch More and Loch Stack (see pic 1).
Make a left at Rhiconich for Kinlochbervie and terriffic short stretch of wide, medium fast sweepers into the fishing port. Continue past the village to Oldshoremore - stop for a hot chocolate or bowl of soup at a good cafe with character (pic 2, 3). Keep going another 2 kms to Balchrick and for a walk on a most stunning beach (pic 4).
Hope the pics come out.

Take a circular route from inverness to Tongue/Durness/Ullapool/Inverness and I guarantee you will not be dissappointed. The scenery is some of the best Scotland has to offer, the roads are empty all year round, even the single track roads are up for silly speeds if you keep your wits about you.If you ride out on a sunday though phone ahead to check petrol station times,(ullapool/scourie/altnaharra/lairg)-remember that these places are between 50 and 70 miles apart.Scourie to Kylesku will blow you away!!!

This is the "Empty Quarter" of Britain, hardly anyone there, the coastline and scenery are spectacularly beautiful.

Totally deserted most of the time, long straight sections that really make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Animals straying into the road can be a problem sometimes and not that many nice corners, but a great straight blast. Consider returning via the A838 to make a nice loop. Not many fuel stops in this part of the world so make sure you fuel up properly.
