I have used this road quite a few times over the years 90% going from west to east. Its a quicker return home from the Alston, Heartside round trip if I have not the time to go over to Hawes and Richmond back home. Above reviews are accurate, there are some bumpy sections and have see a few sheep. found a bit of a handful trying to go quick on the 1200 Bandit but nice at 45-50 and have time to take in the view. Would not recomend on a sports bike at all even my VFR400 bounced me around too much. On a relaxing 2 up touring day its fantastic. Don forget to stop off at Middleton in Teesdale for a cuppa at the cafe.
did this route from west to east and caught up with a polic e car wjhich was undertaking speed training and ghue3ss what it pulled overt to let me past withiut any problems,AMAZING
I enjoyed this quite a lot. The above comments are pretty accurate, and the route isnt really suited to sportsbikes. On the other hand you dont really need an Adventure bike either. My Bonnie (loaded with travel gear) had absolutely no problems.
This area is a good alternative to the dales - the roads are much quieter. This is a classic B-road - plenty of ups and downs, narrow and bumpy in places with plenty of bends and some decent straights. You probably wont enjoy it on a stiffly sprung sports bike, but on a KTM Adventure or similar its fantastic fun.
I ride this road regularly on my GS Adventure and dont have a problem getting 40mph+. Although there are some tricky streches and a few hazardous but on the whole this is a great road, I travel from Consett to Lancaster on this road as well as numerous other destinations. It has some beautiful views and is generally a quiet road.
Rode this one lots of times, be carefull at the Brough end as it's open moore and you get plenty of sheep on the road, closed moore at Middleton end. Very bumpy in places, eepecially in corners that can pitch you off line, plenty of blind corners....in short, you need to keep your wits about you, I've seen a few lads go off on this road.
Living in North yokshire I took a look at the map looking for a new road to try and on paper this one looks good. However its slow and laborious unless you like looking at the scenery. Rides like a single track road with not many road markings to use. Gets very bumpy and lots of slow tight bends and hills, if you get above 40mph youre doing well. Not a road I'd use again.
Excellent route, beats the A66 anytime. Some great corners and good stretches of straight road, watch out though, can be quite bumpy in places. Been over a couple of times and never seen the police. Couple of cattle grids but not seen any animals on the road. Can be a little exposed on windy days, but that just adds to the fun.
